136398 N8110X Carolina Warbirds, Patuxent River Maryland Grumman S2F-1, currently a US-2B Carolina Warbirds  was the registered new owner when I checked 2-12-2024.  DDJ 2-12-2024

136398 was purchased by Erik Anderson in July 2018.  His intentions are to make the aircraft airworthy, and start flying it.  DDJ 8-18-2018.

This Tracker previously belonged to the late Merle Maine of Ontario OR.  The aircraft had been up for sale in Trade-a-Plane in 2008 for $79,000 and the new airworthiness certificate was issued on 4-21-2011 to Mr. Hansen.  DDJ 5-18-2013.

As of May 19, 2009 this Tracker was still located at the Mojave Airport as it has been at least since 2001.  It was located at the far west end of the field when I saw it in May of 2009.

136431 N37AM Cavanaugh Flight Museum, Inc.,  Addison TX Grumman
S-2B currently US-2B
Nose ID 485.  This was at Oshkosh in 2002 and as of January 2008 is being promoted in Warbird Depot as being available for air shows.  I was able to visit the Cavanaugh Flight Museum in March of 2009.  The Tracker was sitting outside in the gloom and the rain, while the rest of the other flyable air were in the four hangars that are part of the museum..  Trackers get no respect!!  I did find out that that 136431 was originally purchased and used to take Museum members to airshows.  However, that function has now been taken over by the DC-3 that the Museum now has.  Hopefully the Tracker will get moved back inside and also be requested by airshows in the future.  See my photo collection of this US-2B on my photo page.  The link is below.

Registered with the FAA as Grumman Serial Number 061 and was operated by California Dept of Forestry (CDF). Was Tanker 76.  Replaced by 152337 and no longer in service with CDF.  As of 9-22-2006 ownership transferred to Columbia Airport.  If you have a chance to stop by the Columbia Airport, you might by the airport Director's office and see if Jim Thomas will take you out to the Tracker, as one has to cross an active runway to get to the aircraft.  Jim was most gracious in taking me out to the Tracker for photos and providing information.  The airframe had 9952.2 hours on it when it arrived at Columbia for the last time.  Cost to purchase the aircraft for display was $16,000.

136421 S2F-1 Castle Air Museum, Atwater, CA In November of 2012 we noted that 136421 had been moved to the Castle Air Museum in Atwater, CA from Sequoia Airport in Visalia, CA where it had been setting for many years.  Vito Orlandella wrote in recently that he and his wife Sandy were the previous owners and did donate it to the museum last year.  Vito also updated me on the history of the aircraft.  Before he purchased 136421 it was a spare airframe for CDF that was never converted to a tanker.  Some history on it from Vita:  "It originally was a Navy S2F then converted to a US2A and transferred to the US Marines. It's last known assigned duty was in Iwakuni Japan and flew many special ops missions in Vietnam.  I have worked with several S2's and this one has wiring harnesses for special electronics I've never seen in an S2 before plus rocket racks on a US2A. It was retired to DM Az and then acquired and flown to Fresno Ca in 1973 to be an air tanker. I moved it to Sequoia field in 1992."  Thanks to Vita and Sandy for donating with engines so that it could be restored and put on display rather than being scrapped out.  Another Tracker saved for posterity!  DDJ 11-3-2013

Formerly on the ramp at Sequoia Airport, Visalia, CA until it was moved to The Castle Air Museum in Atwater, CA on 11-14-2012.  It will be undergoing restoration and then placed on static display in the outside display area.  Information on this important move was provided by Vander Jagt.

This airframe was previously owned by a private individual.  According to Frederick Weber of TBM, Inc. at the Sequoia Airport at Visalia, 136421 has been donated to the Milestones of Flight Museum in Lancaster, CA.  Currently the engines are off the aircraft so it appears that the aircraft will need to be disassembled and trucked to its new home.  Information and photos of 136421 were provided by Frederick Wester.  I was unaware of this aircraft until informed by Mr. Wester.

DDJ 2-17-2019.

Registration expired on 3-31-2013.  Still registered as of 6-11-2014. DDJ

Previously owned by Museum of Wings and Things-1996-2000; Tracker Air Group-2000-2004; Abbatare-2004 to 2009.  This aircraft flew in September of 2005 on trip to its new home in Arlington, WA.  Air Station is a museum named after the fact there used to be an Naval Air Station at Arlington, WA.  In May of 2012 I was able to visit and photograph 136427 at the Arlington, WA airport.  The ADF antenna and searchlight have been added since 2004.

136536 S2F-1 Pennsylvania Academy of Art, Philadelphia, PA Grumman Serial Number 445.  This Tracker was at one time registered as N436DF and labeled as CDF Air Tanker 100.  However, registration N436DF has been passed on to Turbo Tanker 152337 with Tanker Number 76.  Tanker 100 is now 152808 registered as N441DF.  136536 as of August of 2007 is sitting at Mather.
In November 28, 2009 the airframe, minus engines, went up for sale on Ebay for $10,000.  The aircraft was located at Joppa, AL and from satellite photos and the photos on the Ebay site the Tracker appears to be located in a salvage yard in Joppa.  The airframe has a total of 11,707.1 hours on it.  It did not sell in this auction.
The engines are being sold separately for $4,500 a piece and include the accessories and engine mounts.  Engine One has 914.7 hours TSO and Engine Two has 1278.9 hours TSO.  One engine did sell on December 22, 2009 for $4,500.
On January 7, 2010 the airframe went up for sale for $5,000 on a five day Ebay sale.

Specline Inc dba The Cactus Air Force of Carson City, NV purchased this airframe for spare parts from John Grisham of Blountsville, Alabama.  When it returns to Carson City parts such as the wheels and tires will be removed and used to get 133204 flying.  It will be used as a spare part aircraft and as a engine test stand.

The above did not work out as planned.  Without getting into the ugly details it looks like the person in Joppa, AL sold the aircraft twice with it ending up as horrible and ugly looking work of art in downtown Philadelphia, PA.  There may yet be legal ramifications to all of this.

This has been put into the museum/display category in October 2011 as it is now supposedly on public display, such as it is.   Construction started on 10-18-2011.

136540 S2F-1 American Wings Air Museum, Blaine, MN This aircraft was de-registered on 5-16-2015.  The building the main museum was in was sold, and many of the aircraft were put in storage.  The Tracker and several others are still on outside display.  The registration was N8114Z.  The aircraft is being moved from the Registered category to the Museum/Outside Display category.
DDJ 2-17-2019.

Aircraft formerly belonged to Dick Kantrud.  The Tracker is now undergoing restoration and will be flying soon.  Props need to have AD complied with.  If you look at the series of photos below please note that this Tracker flew in September of 2004  .  The American Wings Air Museum is going through some tough times as it lost its main hangar.  There is no mention of the Tracker on its website and it can be assumed any restoration has stopped due to funding and lack of interest.  We would expect to see this aircraft up for sale some time in the future to provide funding for the Grumman OV-1s the museum maintains and are the true focus of the orgization.

S2F-1 Siskiyou County, Yreka, CA This aircraft was deregistered 12-3-2014.  It is transferred from the Registered category to the Museum/Outside Display category.  This was formerly registered as N404DF.
DDJ 2-17-2019

This has apparently been sold to Siskiyou County in northern California.  What is questionable at this time is whether it has also been deregistered and no longer carries an N number.  As it is a static display it would no longer need one.  DDJ 5-18-2013.

Registered with the FAA as Serial Number 455.  Operated by California Dept of Forestry (CDF) as old Tanker 80.  It was repainted as Tanker 94 when old Tanker 94 (133204) was taken out of service circa 2004.

This is now at the Firefighter Memorial and Aircraft Museum at Weed Airport, CA, having arrived there as Tanker 94 on July 29, 2005.  Thank you to Aad van der Voet for informing me that this was the airframe at Weed.

It looks like between June of 2010 and July of 2011 136546 was moved off the ramp at the Weed airport into a field next to the hangars which is visible from the I-5 north bound rest stop.

This aircraft is registered with the FAA as Serial Number 476.  However, in July of 2001 it was in involved in a wheels up landing and is currently  on display at the Estrella Warbird Museum in Paso Robles, CA.  It was operated by California Dept of Forestry (CDF) as Tanker 74 and may be on loan to the museum.  Note he bent prop blades and missing bomb bay. Replaced by 149854 as Tanker 74.  As of Feb. 2009 the aircraft was still registered to USDA, although the Status is in question and possible sale was reported.

136534 US-2B Tom Reilly of Vintage Aircraft, Willington, DE The first time I visited 136534 at the Kissimmee Gateway, FL airport was in July 2010. The aircraft at that time looked to be in reasonable shape for being stored outside.  My return visit in July 2021 told a totally different and sad story.  The aircraft looked derelict, highly weathered, and the props had been removed.  In other words, 136534 is currently in very sad shape.   It has been moved from its previous position on the ramp.  The wings have been folded and the propellers removed.  For the wings to be folded, an engine would have needed to be running, unless an external source of 3,000 psi hydraulic pressure was supplied.  The propellers would have also have been on the aircraft at the time of the engine run-ups.  The bombs on the wings were also removed.  The Tracker was deregistered in 2018.  DDJ 7-27-2021.

The registration on this was cancelled after it expired on 11-30-2018.  Tom Reilly was right at the end of the restoration of the XP-82 to flying condition.  The registration of the Tracker may have lapsed due to lack of time to do the paperwork.  It will be moved from the Registered category to the Storage category.  The aircraft registration number was N5244B.
DDJ 2-17-2019.

Tom Reilly is now the owner of 136534 which the last we knew was located at the Kissimmee, FL Airport and was being made ready by Mr. Reilly when he had the time to fly it to Georgia.    DDJ 5-18-2013

In April of 2009 I spoke with Tom Reilly, who is the owner of  Vintage Aircraft, and used to own the Flying Tigers Restoration Museum at the Kissimmee, FL Airport.  He informed me that 136534 is now owned by Dennis Callahan of Neptune Beach, FL.  The last photos of this Tracker were taken in February of S008 showing it still at the Kissimmee Airport.
136534 is also a movie star having been used as a prop in The Final Countdown in 1980 during the first five minutes of the film.

USA S2F / S-2 Trackers Know to be Scraped
Listed in numerical order by US Navy Bureau Number

The Trackers that were located at St. Augustine, FL were scrapped the first half of 2011. I visited in July 2011 and confirmed they were no longer there.  All that was left were a few pieces of scrap metal on the ground.  The nine airframes had been located in a small residential yard just north of the St. Augustine just west of US 1 since the early 1970s when they were moved there from the airport.  Since that time they have been somewhat of an aviation attraction while at the same time providing spare parts for flyable S2F's.  While the neighbors in the area are no doubt glad to see them leave it is always a sad day when any aircraft gets scrapped out.  For photos of the aircraft go to My Tracker Photo Page.

Information obtained from Stewart Bailey at The Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum indicates that 136663 was purchased by Jacob Wyrick in Montana.  His original plan was to take this on as a project aircraft but is now interested in trading or selling the aircraft and has been in touch with Evergreen.  However, right now Evergreen does not have a budget to do this.  We will see if we can obtain more information on 13663 and photos from Mr. Wyrick.  DDJ 3-19-2013

This tracker sold on Ebay on April 8, 2012.  It is missing the rudder and has no radios.  The airframe has 10,968 hours with zero time engines as of 1988.  No mention is given of the hours on the engines since install.
This is Grumman Serial Number 572 and was last registered with CDF as N453DF and apparently started with the CDF as Tanker 91 even though it is currently marked as Tanker 86.  The FAA online record for this N Number shows that the aircraft was "destroyed" in 2002.  However, that is not the case as Mr. Churchman purchased the aircraft in 2007 in a US Government auction.  Further communication with the FAA indicates that the aircraft was only decommissioned for sale.  As of December 2010 Mr. Churchman was looking to move the aircraft to El Paso or sell it if anyone is interested.  There is no N number registered to this as of December 2010.
